3D Secure

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is a system that gives you an additional layer of security when shopping online. It protects you against unauthorised and fraudulent card transactions by requiring authentication every time you make an online purchase from a 3D Secure Merchant. It is completely free of charge, easy to use and available on all your BNF Visa Debit and Credit Cards.3D Secure works using dynamic One-Time Passwords, which will be sent to the cardholder's chosen mobile number when carrying out an online transaction.

How much does the service cost?

The service is completely free of charge.

How do you enrol your card in 3D Secure?

Simply log onto BNF Internet Banking, click on the 'Cards' menu, select 'Enrol Card' and input the required details. Alternatively visit your preferred BNF Bank Branch.

Which BNF Bank cards are linked to the 3D Secure service?

The service is on all BNF Bank cards:

  • BNF Bank Visa Debit Card
  • BNF Bank Visa Classic Credit Card
  • BNF Bank Visa Gold Credit Card
  • BNF Bank Visa PAVI & PAMA Credit Card

How does it work?

Once you have registered your card for the 3D Secure service and you are making a purchase online at a participating merchant (i.e. seller's website) you will be asked to enter a One-Time-Password that will be sent to your phone via SMS. The transaction will be authenticated within seconds and your purchase will be complete.

You will receive a new passcode every time you attempt to make a purchase at a participating merchant. This helps prevent the unauthorised use of your card and increases your confidence when shopping online.

How do you recognise participating merchants?

A participating merchant will have the VISA logo prominently displayed on the website. You will only be asked to authenticate an online purchase through the 3D Secure service when you shop with a participating merchant. More and more online stores are signing up for this service every day.

Do you need to re-enrol if you lose or renew your card?

When a card is reported as lost, a new card will be issued. This new card must then be re-enrolled in 3D Secure.

In the case of renewal of a Debit Card, re-enrolment in 3D Secure will be required.

In the case of renewal of a Credit Card which has already been enrolled in 3D Secure and where the card number remains unchanged, the new card will also be automatically enrolled.
