Banif Bank (Malta) plc announces new Chairman
Banif Bank (Malta) plc has announced the appointment of Dr Michael Frendo LL.D., LL.M. (Exon.) as Chairman of its Board of Directors. Dr Frendo succeeds Mr Joseph Sammut who resigned from this post with effect from the 13th of May 2013. The Bank’s shareholders thanked Mr Sammut for presiding over the Board of Directors since his appointment in March 2007, and for his commendable contribution throughout the past six years. As Chairman, Mr Sammut played a major role in the realisation of the Banif project in Malta, and in positioning the Bank as a fully-fledged financial institution considered today as a leading player in Malta.
Dr Frendo’s experience and competence will further strengthen the Organisation’s position in the local market. His contribution will be crucial in the Bank’s efforts to accomplish its growth plans and to continue investing in efforts that support businesses and individuals in Malta.
A former Speaker of the House of Representatives and a former Minister responsible for various portfolios including Foreign Affairs, Information and Communication Technologies, and the Arts, Dr Frendo is a lawyer with a postgraduate specialisation in European Union law who has also worked in the private sector in both Malta and the United Kingdom. Dr Michael Frendo is a signatory of the Treaty of Lisbon and was a member of the European Convention on the Future of Europe. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Laws at the University of Malta, sits on the Advisory Board of the University of East Anglia’s London Academy of Diplomacy and is a member of the European Group of Public Law. Dr Frendo has been nominated on the Venice Commission – an international independent legal think-tank that acts as an advisory body on constitutional matters.
He has published widely including a number of books and articles on European, diplomatic and legal issues.
