About Contactless

Contactless provides a faster, simpler and safer way to pay for purchases. BNF Contactless-enabled cards offer greater convenience to customers, eliminating the need to restrict spend to cash on hand.

All BNF Cards have the 'contactless' symbol which may be used to effect contactless payment at point of sale terminals which display the symbol. You can make use of Contactless technology on any VISA supported ATM or EPOS Terminal, both locally and worldwide, and the payment is processed instantly and automatically.

Use Contactless

Contactless payments are accepted in a wide range of retail establishments, hotels, restaurants and shops.  You can still use your card to effect transactions by entering your PIN (secured through the EMV Chip technology), when prompted by the EPOS Terminal.  

To effect a Contactless Payment, follow these three simple steps:

  • Tap your BNF Contactless Card against the contactless reader and check that the value is the correct amount.
  • Wait until the point of sale emits an alert (sound or light) to indicate successful processing of the transaction.
  • Your payment should be completed within seconds.

Activate your Card

For security purposes, BNF cards are mailed inactive. To activate your card, please follow the steps below: 

  • Contact Customer Care on +356 2260 1000 from Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 8:00pm or on Saturday between 8:00am and 1:00pm
  • If the first transaction is via EPOS, insert your BNF Debit / Credit Card for a Chip & PIN verification, in order to ensure that the card is in your rightful possession.  
  • If your first transaction is for cash withdrawal, you can activate your Contactless Credit Card via any ATM.

Contactless Payment Limits

The transaction limits pegged to our Contactless Credit and Debit Cards may be viewed from the links provided below.   

  • €50 per transaction is contactless-enabled with a maximum of 5 transactions.
  • The cumulative daily maximum limit of €250 (5x€50) is accepted with PIN only, any payment over €250, will require a Chip and PIN.
  • On the 6th consecutive contactless transaction, you will be required to make a Chip and PIN entry for security reasons.

If you're already a BNF Cardholder and you'd like to switch to Contactless, you may submit a request for replacement by advising your relationship officer at the branch or by calling Customer Care on +356 2260 1000. You can also opt to send a secure message via Internet Banking.

If you're new to BNF, applying for a BNF Card is simple.

To apply for a Contactless Credit Card

All you need to do is visit a BNF Branch and bring with you:

  • Your ID Card.
  • Evidence of income:
    • Last year's FS3 and the last 3 months' payslips; or
    • If you're self-employed, the last 3 years' Income Tax Return, including the Profit and Loss Account.
  • Bank statements of all your accounts held with other banks.

The Bank reserves the right to request further documentation if deemed necessary.
